January 31st

Antique cloth-bound books
by a thin bunch of daisies,
pencils in a glass

This haiku is a perfect snapshot. I can see it so vividly. I like all the upright images in the poem; the books, the flowers, the pencils. It's like the setting of a scene. Who is going to write and why? What are they going to write? Who picked the daisies....? Freya

A published Haiku

Guess what?

I've had a haiku published in The New Writer! OK, it's only one haiku but it's difficult getting accepted for publication in this "different" magazine. I know, I've been trying for over a year!

For those of you who subscribe to The New Writer, my haiku is on page 33. If you don't receive The New Writer, you can find out more about it here

And if you enjoy my haiku, you may well enjoy my other poetry. Dial 174 has published my poems Hearth and Cosmic Riddles in #88. To find out how to obtain copies of Dial, please contact
John Claypole by email at Dial 174

January 26th

Delicate bluebells
shyly peeking from the fence
take a bow and rest

A beautiful, tender haiku. I enjoyed the imagery of the flowers being on stage and feeling shy about being in the spotlight. Freya

Haiku 25-1

dawn, a hint of light
in the low cloud shrouding
this house on the hill

January 24th

Bright carpet of trees
softly embroidered with vivid
swaying light citron leaves

What I like about this haiku is the unusual analogy. I normally think of a carpet as being at ground level eg a carpet of bluebells. Turning the canopy of trees into a carpet is different and gives the reader a sense of height as she looks down at the citron leaves. I liked the delicate nature of this carpet that the writer conveys by describing it as "softly embroidered". Freya

Sun & Cloud

The sun is shy and
Hides behind never-ceasing
Thickly grey rain-clouds.

Twilight - 4

Torn three ways she stands
Alone, loving the coldness
Yet drawn to the beast.

Twilight - 3

Caught in the cycle
Of the moon, man-beast warring,
Yearns for mastery.

Twilight - 2

Lusting for blood, warmth
And life, heartless and cold he
Is trapped forever.

Twilight - 1

Twilight falls, new moon
Rises, eclipsing the night,
Heralds breaking dawn.
